Let us not lose our history 1-10-02 |
From: Carol Spooner Date: Thu Jan 10, 2002 3:34 am Subject: Let us not lose our history at this historic moment
Dear Bernard & All --
The fight to return Pacifica to its values & purposes has been going on since about 1992 (Maria Gilardin of KPFA was the first "fired and banned" producer who asked inconvenient financial questions at a board meeting in 1992) and was begun by activists from KPFK and KPFA (Pacifica Accountability Committee and Take Back KPFA), continued with the birth of Save KPFA and FreePacifica activists in 1995 after the LA & Berkeley purges of that year and the complaint to the CPB for violation of open meetings requirements filed by activists in 1995, and has been continued since the 1999 KPFA lockout by activists from Berkeley and throughout Northern California -- more than 10,000 of whom marched through the streets of Berkeley on July 31, 1999 for KPFA and free speech radio -- and who raised most of the more than $500,000 needed to fund the legal challenges to the former Pacifica Board. The Xmas coup of December 2000 made the movement by-coastal in a big way and added tremendous energy to this movement, but I must differ with your assessment that this movement "was organized and executed primarily by listeners and producers from the New York listening area."
With warm regards and In solidarity,

Subject: Fwd: Integrated I-PNB/Activist Schedule As you can well imagine this is a very important board meeting. The future of WBAI will be further shaped at this meeting. We are on the threshold of a historic victory. This victory will be recorded in USA media history as being a monumental gain for listener sponsored radio. It is a national victory that was organized and executed by listeners and producers primarily fromthe New York listening area. It is absolutely imperative that you attend this historic gathering. As you are probably aware the forces of reaction are calling on their troops to sidetrack this victory. We can not allow that to happen. Utrice Leid, Paul Derienzo, Marjorie Moore and Clayton Riley are asking listeners to attend this weekends board meeting. We must be there to safely shepperd the changes that we have won. (ie. The return of the fired and banned, national and local advisory board elections, full fiscal transparency and the return of a genuine respect for our lisenership by on air producers, a return to the Pacifica Mission and a return to interesting, educational, creative programming) Please do everything you can to attend this meeting especially during these times:
Fri, Jan. 11th
Saturday, Jan. 12th
2:00 - 3:30 pm - WBAI
3:30 - 4:45 pm - Bylaws review and revision/LAB elections;
4:45 - 5:15 pm - Gag Rule BERNARD |
