"Pacifica" national board member Farell:
it's time to go
8-25-01

Robert Farrell, it's Time to Face the Music

In recent weeks, Pacifica Foundation director Robert Farrell has signaled his intention to "switch sides" and support the dissident members on the board. Robert Farrell is just as responsible for the mess in LA and New York as Bessie Wash, Ken Ford, and John Murdock (among others).

ROBERT FARRELL, OF SAN PEDRO CALIFORNIA, HAS SO FAR MANAGED TO AVOID ANSWERING FOR HIS MALFEASANCE ON THE PNB. IT'S TIME TO LET HIM KNOW WHERE WE STAND.

Mr. Farrell was elected to the national board in October 1998, after gaining the trust of the Local Advisory Board of KPFK, saying that he would oppose the proposed bylaw amendments at the Pacifica National Board(PNB) meeting in 1999. These amendments turned the PNB into a top- down, self-perpetuating, self-selecting body, and are currently being challenged by the California Attorney General

Farrell's stated opposition to the bylaw changes was crucial to his election to the PNB by KPFK 's Local Advisory Board. However, he voted in favor of the bylaw changes, despite a resolution passed by the LAB in Los Angeles opposing them.

In light of Mr. Farrell's vote and his refusal to communicate with the LAB, they voted to remove him from the national board in May, 2000. Neither Farrell nor the PNB recognized this action or their right to take this action, which is granted by California Corporation Code 5222 .

Thus, it must be understood that Mr. Farrell was recalled by his Local Advisory Board and his continuing position on the PNB may be illegal. Nonetheless, he continues to sit on the executive committee.

Mr. Farrell was on the PNB executive committee during the attempted sale and subsequent lockdown of KPFA in 1999 and supported the actions of the directors.

Mr. Farrell was also on the executive committee during the December 2000 'Christmas Coup' at WBAI and shares full responsibility for the squandering of funds on a Big Brother security system and for the firings, bannings, censorship and harassment; and for letting Utrice Leid run amok.

BOB FARREL HAS BEEN PUBLICLY SILENT AND THEREFORE COMPLICIT IN KPFK MANAGEMENT'S REMOVAL OF THE MOST PROGRESSIVE VOICES ON KPFK.

His local station, KPFK, continues to drop popular programs, such as David Barsamian's 'Alternative Radio' at the whim of manager, Mark Schubb, who has pre-empted Democracy Now several times in support of the Washington management's efforts to silence Amy Goodman.

Robert Farrell is a named defendant in the Listeners' Lawsuit (Spooner, et al), although he was dropped from the LAB lawsuit last winter in what proved to be a futile attempt to open a dialogue with him.

IT IS BECAUSE OF MR. FARRELL'S BROKEN PROMISES AND HIS ALLIANCE WITH THE CORPORATE CLIQUE WHO HAVE BROUGHT DISASTER TO PACIFICA THAT WE DEMAND HIS IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION.

His latest attempts to realign himself in order to stay on the Board can not be looked at in isolation from his past performance. If he really wants to support democracy at Pacifica, he needs to stop hiding and pretending he doesn't know what's going on or isn't responsible. Pacifica needs more than empty political promises.

How you can help

Southern California residents should write letters of 300 words or less to the editors of Farrell's local papers. Include your signature, address and phone numbers - the paper will only print your city.
